Dr Farouk Umar, University of Southampton

Farouk Umar is a research fellow on the ESRC-GCRF project Water and Waste, within the School of Geography and Environment. He supports the project by analysing data concerning waste profiles and waste found in the environment as measured through transect surveys. He uses geospatial data to delineate off-grid areas of the cities in Ghana and Kenya, using a range of approaches and carry out administrative tasks associated with the research, particularly data management and archiving.

Farouk has a PhD in Geographical Information Systems from the University of Sheffield, focusing on profiling access to healthcare facilities in Nigeria.

He has an interdisciplinary background that focuses on using geospatial techniques to analyse International development-related issues, such as access to healthcare and WASH.

He has worked with NGOs, supporting complex geostatistical data processing tasks and workflow development related to the production and validation of data in Sub-Saharan African Countries.
